Happy 80th, Janaka!

I am just so thrilled to still be connected to you after all these years. You've made a mark on so many lives- I know that for sure because of the impact you've had on mine. You're one of the most dedicated, caring and ethical leaders I've ever met and I will forever be grateful to you for making time in your calendar for me when there was literally no reason to. From dinners at Indian restaurants to zoom calls and property visits- every time we've connected it's been a real pleasure. I can't believe it's been nearly 20 (or +??) years already. Happiest of birthdays to you- I'm thrilled you're taking it slower and untethering you from emails, texts and phones. You deserve it!

Dear Janaka,
There’s always a moment that separates the past from the future. One of those moments for me was when I met you. Over the past 58 years you have played a pivotal role in my life and I’ve thought about all of the interactions with you that have shaped my life. Climbing mountains, meditating, milking cows, gardening, cutting wood for people in need, digging outhouses, running businesses, mentoring others and most of all—remembering life’s true mission. Your integrity, values, steadfastness and commitment to making the world around you a better place have always been models for me about how to live in this world while treating others with dignity and respect. I’m relieved that you came through your health challenges this past year and ½. Once again, you were a role model on how to get through tough times. And I can’t imagine the world without you in it so hoping you’ll stick around for a bit longer.
But obviously that won’t be another 58 years on the planet so I do hope you make the most of these remaining years to celebrate all that this life has to offer. Thank you for all of the mentoring, support, encouragement and care that you have provided me (and so may others) over these many years. I’m glad you were born and that we shared a path this lifetime!
So Happy 80th plus all of the next birthdays you will celebrate. And as Acharya Jitendra would say: “I wish you many more ripening samskaras!”

I hope that it's never too late to say "I'm glad you were born". The world is a better place because you are here! Your drive to serve is a model for humankind. I cannot forget the first time we saw you at Delhi airport and had the pleasure of hosting you, Kasturi, Raj and Kali. It was such a great fun to show you around Delhi.
